Schooner Racing
The PDRacers can be joined together with a Grout Piece to make them into a poor man's schooner.
You can then use them in pairs to do any of the other races.
Square Rigger
Everyone gets the same rectangular sized polytarp.
Allowed to dart, fold, or use line between the grommets any way you want, and you can add grommets (or similar anchor points) to it anywhere you want.
You are not allowed to cut, splice, or add to it.
Hoist it anyway you want, and use that as your single sail.
Possible modification - you can paddle upwind to the windward mark, and sail down wind with the square rig.
Maybe only allow one canoe paddle to be used, no oars.
Shower Curtain Challenge
Same as Square Rigger, only that every one uses a commercially available shower curtain with a defined maximum size.
With all of the very interesting patterns of shower curtain prints, it should be a very colorful race.
Sparring 10 x 10
Everyone makes a sail rig from a 10' x 10' polytarp, and two 10' long spars that are 1.5 x 1.5" max size.
You are allowed to modify the spars or tarp in any way, but not allowed to use additional spar or tarp material when making your sail rig.
You CAN use as much rope, duct tape, thread, nails / screws and glue as you want.
Also the spars need to start as seperate pieces, you are not allowed to start with a 16' piece and a 4' piece.
Bucket Duck
Everyone builds a boat that fits inside commercially made bucket (or barrel, or trash can etc), up to 30 gallons in size.
You can use any materials, there is no limit on materials or spending allowance.
You can even use the bucket as part of the boat.
The Boat must be transported to the launch area, completely inside the bucket, then assembled on the beach.
The race is run like the $50 boat race, everyone is towed to, and then teathered to an anchored boat.
All the teathers are released at the same time, and the first one to sail down wind back to the beach wins.
Another race that could be run is to tow the bucket duck from a PDRacer, and when you get to the windward mark, the bucket duck is set free to race back down wind.
Probably would be fastest to have 2 people in the pdracer, towing an empty bucket duck, then one person jumps into the bucket duck for the downwind leg.
