I can't stand getting beat by Shorty, so I have modified my flotation to be able to self rescue properly.

For more info, see Livingston Race

I added foam to one side of the boat, about 4'' thick by about 7'. It is held in with a stick and a couple pieces of plywood.

Here is how it supposed to work. If I capsize, the boat will float on its side to about the top of the foam. I then right the boat by pulling down on the center board. Then I climb in and have very little water in the boat. If I capsize to the wrong side, flip it to the other side and then right it. It saves a little weight with foam in only one side. I don't know, though, if I can climb in without causing another capsize. I'll maybe add some kind of rope sling for a foot-hold.

Picture shows my new rudder, off of an Uncle John 10.

I have been repairing a real cajun pirogue that my uncle owned 50 years ago. It is frame and plywood and was in repairable condition. I'm having fun doing it and am nearly through.
